Former DOJ official Anurima Bhargava joins social impact agency, bringing deep expertise in education policy and civil rights

Washington, DC, February 24, 2020 — Whiteboard Advisors, a unique strategic consulting and social impact agency focused on the intersection of education and the future of work, today announced the addition of Anurima Bhargava as senior advisor. Bhargava joins the firm with a distinguished track record of working to further equitable access to education, having served as Chief of the Educational Opportunities Section of the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice.

“I am excited to partner with Whiteboard Advisors to employ the transformative potential of innovation to provide high-quality learning opportunities for all students,” said Bhargava. “Together, we will identify and scale new approaches and partnerships to promote dignity and justice in the U.S. education system.”

Bhargava has spent her career advocating for and enforcing equal educational opportunities under the law, including issues related to school segregation; school discipline and the school to prison pipeline; harassment and bullying; and the rights of English Learner, LGBTQ and undocumented students.

Prior to joining the Justice Department, she served as Director of the Education Practice at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. In 2018, she was appointed to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, where she currently serves as Commissioner.

Bhargava joins Whiteboard Advisors’ growing team of advisors, which includes former Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift; former North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue; former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Seth Harris; and best-selling author and former Chronicle of Higher Education editor Jeff Selingo.

“Our team has always admired Anurima’s powerful intellect, pragmatism, and fearlessness as a champion of civil rights,” said Ben Wallerstein, Founder and CEO of Whiteboard Advisors. “Her expertise and experience will galvanize our team to keep those challenges — and opportunities — at the center of our work.”
