It is likely that competitive federal grants are going to become scarcer. Congress is already planning to reduce the amount of education programs and funding in the next year (Fiscal Year 2016) and, over the long run, the revenues available for all agencies to use for their policy priorities will be consumed by our growing entitlement spending (taking care of the aging baby boomers) and interest due on existing debts. It is with this in mind, we are broadcasting and simplifying grants that you should know about. There are two K-12 programs to flag right now. First, the Skills for Success grant will distribute $2 million in 4 to 5 competitive awards in 2015 to enhance our understanding of non-cognitive tools and approaches. We break it down for you here. Second, Investing in Innovation grant series is offering $11.5 million for 2 to 4 competitive Validation grants in 2015. The Validation grants, you may recall, provide funding to support the expansion of projects supported by “moderate” evidence of effectiveness to the national or regional level.
